The process of getting a driver’s license in Vegas can be very confusing. For this reason, we have thought it wise to put together a very useful guide to help you get through the entire process. All you need to do is follow the steps below if you want to be a licensed driver in Vegas.
Step 1: Take a driver’s education course
The law requires you to be at least 15 years old for you to take this education course. Vegas driver’s education course comprises of 50 or more hours on-hands driving experience and 30 classroom hours. To take this course, you can either enroll at a private or public high school. The DMV-license professional driving school also offers this course. If you pass, you will obtain the certificate of completion.
Note: You need get auto insurance in Las Vegas before you register the vehicle.
Step 2: Bring the certificate of completion to the DMV
The certificate is what shows that you have undergone the course and passed. With this certificate, you will be allowed to take a permit test. Before you take the test, you must show proof of your identity. Precisely, you should provide your Social Security number or a birth certificate.
Step 3: Find a full-service DMV office
The good news is that the DMV has very many offices within the state, and finding one near you will not be a problem. If you are finding it hard to locate a DMV office, then you can simply call them at 775-684-4830. I would not advise you to visit these offices on Mondays or a day after any holiday because you might find long queues.
License Classes
- Class A, Class B, Class C, Class M.
- Non-Commercial Class A & B, Endorsement J, Endorsement F.
- Restriction B, Restriction J.
Step 4: Pay the MDV Fees
For you to obtain a driver’s license in Vegas, you must pay the MDV fees. If you are below 65, you will pay about $41.25. However, people aged 65 and above pay only $17.25. You will be required to pay an extra $25 for testing in case you need a new license.
Step 5: Take and pass the vision test
You must pass the vision test for you to get a driver’s license in Vegas. Precisely, you must have at least 20 out of 40 for you to obtain full driving privileges. If you fail to get 20 and above, you might either have driving restrictions or fail to gain a driving license.
Applicants who are under 21 must take knowledge tests on top of vision tests. However, they are not required to take the skills tests. On the other hand, applicants who have licenses and are 21 or older will only take the vision test and not knowledge test. You are allowed to wear glasses when you are sitting for these exams.
A conviction in Las Vegas if you driving without a license:
- up to six months in jail and/or
- a fine of up to $1,000.
Step 6: Take the written knowledge test
This test comprises of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass this test, you must have at least 80. The knowledge test is usually offered in Spanish and English. This, therefore, means that you can’t take it if you can read and write either of the two languages. You don’t have to take the tests manually as you can simply take it online.
Step 7: Take and pass the driving skills test
As a first-time driver, you must take and pass the skills test for you to obtain a driver’s license in Vegas. You can schedule a date either over the telephone or online to take this test. Some of the areas that the test covers include:
- Using signals, horn, breaks, accelerator and other car’s controls.
- Parking the car on a hill.
- Releasing the break.
- Your ability to observe and obey the traffic signs.
- Using the turn signals appropriately.
- Your ability to remain within the speed limit.
- Ability to obey road’s lane markings.
- Stopping the car properly.
- Using the side mirrors.
Step 8: Get your driver’s license
After meeting all the requirements, and passing all the tests, your picture will be taken, you will wait for the MDV to mail you the license. Expect to get your license in less than 2 weeks. It’s worth noting that you will not get a full license if you are not yet 16. Instead, you will get an instruction permit.
